What is the Turkey Tune Up?
The “Turkey Tune Up” is a yearly educational seminar and recreation event held in San Diego California which provides information to the interested public about the Wild Turkey its environment, its conservation and the safe legal ethical harvesting of the bird.
The event provides the interested public the opportunity to enter a lottery drawing for the chance at one of many Wild Turkey hunting opportunities offered by the City of San Diego’s Public Utilities Department “Recreational Program” at the picturesque Lake Sutherland property.
PLEASE NOTE: There are fees attached to this years event and drawings.
IF YOU WIN ONE OF THE SCHEDULED HUNTS -There is a Lake Rowboat and Blind Reservation Fee and Lake Hunting Permit fee that must be paid the day of the TTU. Payment is to the to the City of San Diego. Again, the Lake Rowboat and Blind Reservation and the Lake Hunting Permit are for the date of the hunting opportunity, that one wins if their name / card is randomly drawn. Each winner drawn must be present at the time of the drawing and be in possession of a valid & current California Hunting License. City of San Diego’s Public Utilities Department will be accepting cash, check or credit for the fee payment.
We have had guest speakers from the various governmental agencies as well as experts in the field of our Wild Turkeys. For example we have had Wardens, from the California Department of Fish & Game; Rangers, from the U.S. Forest Service - Cleveland National Forest; Officers with the Bureau of Land Management as well as Local Experts with vast knowledge about our local wildlife. and known Expert Wild Turkey callers. The guest speakers not only bring a vast wealth of information, knowledge and skills for the interested public to query, but their Departments have offered maps and guides for the attendees to purchase. We have also given various venders access to the event to demonstrate & then offer their products for sale.
There are raffles for various prizes with the proceeds going the NWTF San Diego Chapter. The raffle proceeds help to ensure future events and the chapters on going endeavors for the conservation of the Wild Turkey and the preservation of our the hunting tradition.
In the past we had provided an outdoor range opportunity's for sighting in & pattering your favorite shotgun. A archery range was also provided to practice ones skills. Many kids at the event have entered our Wild Turkey calling contest & have demonstrated their skills for the audience and some have won great prizes.

What do I have to do to enter the drawing for the Lake Sutherland Hunts?
1. Be there on time
2. Enter your name into the lottery style drawing
3. Bring your valid California Hunting License with Upland Game Bird validation
4. Bring Finances - TUNE UP entry fee, Day Use Lake Fee (if your drawn), & Shopping funds
5. Bring your calendar - So you can pick your preferred slot - in case your name is drawn.
